Seeking The Eternal Things Of God

In seeking to become more like God we must become less like ourselves. We live in a temporal world. We live in a world that is fleeting, aging, dying and coming to not.

So God instructs us to seek those things that are eternal.  Eternal: everlasting, undying, endless.  God wants us to focus our energy and attention on heavenly things.  I believe Colossians 3, gives us great insight into what eternal things look like.

The Apostle Paul says, "If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory." Colossians 3:1-4 NKJV
So according to Colossians the 3rd Chapter, Eternal Things are things that are where Jesus Christ our Lord and savior is...in heaven.  It is not earthly things like: people, houses, money and cars but it is solely contingent upon heavenly things.

Heavenly things are spiritual goods that cannot be destroyed.
Jesus says in Matthew 6:19-21,“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

So, when we are seeking eternal things we are running after spiritual possessions. We are seeking things like: "Love, joy, peace, patience, kinds, gentleness, meekness, temporance and self control."

God wants us seeking Fruits of the Spirit...those eternal things.  Temporal things are fine to have but eternal things are those things we must live by if we are to see Jesus.
